The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max already had its debut in China in late September, and it did not hold much back. A 6.9 inch LTPO AMOLED panel running at 120 Hz, the newest Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip built on a 2 nm process, and storage options that climb all the way to 1 TB. Now the phone is on track to leave China, with a global release expected before the end of the year and HyperOS 4 riding along as the software behind it.
Xiaomi has not published a full list of launch countries or a firm date yet, so treat the timing as close but not locked in. What is clear is that the hardware is not changing for the trip overseas. The same Snapdragon chip, the same display, and the same camera setup that launched in China are expected to carry over to the international version.
What HyperOS 4 actually changes
HyperOS 4 is Xiaomi's next software layer, built on top of Android 17, and it is already running on the Pro Max in China. Xiaomi is calling the new look Soft Light Glass, which adds a translucent, frosted effect to quick settings toggles, widgets, folders and menus rather than the flatter panels HyperOS 3 used. It is a visual change more than a functional one, but it is the first thing most people will notice after updating.
Underneath the new look, Xiaomi says HyperOS 4 has been tuned to use less memory than HyperOS 3, with app launches staying quicker even after months of use and some battery gains on top. Xiaomi has also been talking up new AI features baked into the system, including smarter suggestions in daily apps, although the company has said more about the direction than about exact features.
The rollout itself is happening in stages. Xiaomi has been running China specific beta waves since mid August, starting with the Xiaomi 17 line and the newest Redmi K90 Pro phones, before widening to older Xiaomi and Redmi models. A separate global beta program is already running too, and Xiaomi has said the stable update should reach a broad set of eligible phones, tablets, and even some of its wearables and smart displays over the coming weeks, with October looking like the main window for that global stable push. None of that is an official promise for every region at once, so the safest way to check is still your own phone's software update page once Xiaomi confirms your model and country.
Where this leaves buyers
If you already own a recent Xiaomi flagship, the more interesting news might be HyperOS 4 itself rather than the Pro Max specifically, since the update is set to reach a wide spread of existing phones rather than staying exclusive to the newest hardware. For anyone deciding whether to wait for the global Pro Max or buy something else in the meantime, the fact that Xiaomi is not changing the hardware for the international release is useful information. What launched in China in September is, as far as the specs go, what the rest of the world should expect to get.
We will update this page once Xiaomi confirms firm regions and pricing for the global Pro Max.
