Network Coverage & Bands

Understanding 4G/5G bands and how to ensure your unlocked phone works on your carrier.

The Basics of Network Bands

Cellular networks operate on specific frequencies (bands). When buying an unlocked smartphone, especially from overseas, you must ensure the device's hardware supports the exact bands used by your local telecom provider. If it doesn't, you may experience poor reception, no 5G access, or complete lack of service.

Sub-6GHz 5G vs mmWave

Sub-6GHz is the foundation of global 5G. It provides great coverage and penetrates buildings well, though speeds top out around 1Gbps.

mmWave (Millimeter Wave) operates on ultra-high frequencies. It delivers multi-gigabit speeds but is blocked by glass, trees, and even rain, making it useful mostly in dense urban arenas.

Checking Compatibility

1. Check your carrier's primary LTE and 5G bands.
2. Go to our Phone Finder or the device's spec page.
3. Look under the "Network" tab to verify the bands match.
Missing a primary band will severely cripple your data speeds.
