Gemini Can Now Preview and Edit Files Inside the Chat

On October 29, 2026, Google said the Gemini app can now generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and code directly inside a chat. Google says the capabilities are available to all Gemini users in every language where the Gemini app is available.

How editing works

• Expand a file to full screen and type edits directly.
• Highlight text to ask Gemini questions about it.
• Have Gemini refine the text or visuals in the file.

Where it works

PDF preview and editing works on the web and on mobile. Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code are supported on the web only.

Google's example

Google's demonstration turns uploaded handwritten lecture notes into a PDF study guide. The user can then edit the guide by hand, highlight sections for Gemini to change, and ask further questions.
