iPhone Duo Preorders Sell Out Into 2027 as Apple Faces Supply Limits

Update, October 27: Delivery estimates for new online orders have not settled. Within days of preorders opening, the estimates moved from mid November to late January 2027, and some individual orders have since moved earlier, to November 16 to 23 or November 20 to 30. Pickup returned in the United States and Canada on October 24 for about five minutes, and most stores had no slots. Check the estimate on your own order.

Update, October 24: Launch day brought queues at some stores and walk in sellouts at some locations, which matches the stock warning Apple gave beforehand. Delivery estimates for new orders remain in late January 2027.

Update, October 23: Apple has told stores that walk in Duo stock will be small and will vary by country. Online pickup availability is expected on October 24. Delivery estimates for new orders now point to late January 2027.

Demand for Apple's first foldable has outrun what Apple can build. Preorders for the iPhone Duo opened on Friday, and within a day the estimated delivery window for every color and storage size had slipped past the phone's official October 23 launch date, to shipping estimates clustered around late January 2027. For a phone that starts at $1,999, that is a long wait, and it has turned the launch into a supply story rather than a sales one.

What the delay means for buyers

Apple has not said whether any Duo stock will be available for walk in purchases on launch day. Its own website has a note asking shoppers to check back on October 24, which suggests some limited store pickup supply could appear the day after launch, but nothing has been confirmed. If you want a phone for launch week, the realistic options are a store visit on the 24th or a waiting list, not a standard online order.

Price is part of the squeeze too. The 256 GB model starts at $1,999, with the 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB versions at $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199. Accessories are also priced separately, with the Duo Folio at $129 and the Duo Case at $79.

Was launching preorders early a mistake?

A prominent Apple newsletter has argued that Apple should not have opened preorders so early. The reasoning is that Apple knew a new foldable would face tight supply from the start, because of the manufacturing difficulty of the hinge and display, and that opening orders before stock was ready simply pushed the wait into the open. Apple has not responded to that criticism publicly.

There is an upside for Apple in the numbers, even if the timing is messy. Strong preorder demand for a new category is the result the company wanted, and a long backlog can help keep the product in the news for months. The downside is that buyers who wanted the phone at launch are left waiting, and some of them may move to rival foldables in the meantime.

The EU energy label for the Duo lists a total battery capacity of 4,883 mAh, which is worth noting for anyone comparing it with a standard iPhone. We will update this piece once Apple confirms how much launch stock is available in stores and whether the January shipping estimate changes.
