Chip generations

The M6 is a newer chip generation. Apple's comparisons put it up to 30 percent ahead of the M5 model in graphics and up to 25 percent ahead in on device AI workloads. The M5 Pro and M5 Max come from the previous generation but sit in the pro tier, and they support up to 128GB of memory. Apple does not publish a direct comparison between the M6 and the M5 Pro or M5 Max, so compare the tiers against your own work.

Who should choose the 14 inch M6

  • Buyers who want a new 14 inch MacBook Pro at the lowest price, starting at $1,999.
  • People whose work depends on the newer chip generation for on device AI and graphics.
  • Anyone who does not need Touch, the OLED panel or the pro tier chips.

Who should choose the touchscreen model

  • People who want Touch on a Mac, a feature that is new with this model.
  • Color and video professionals who need the brightest panel, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and factory calibration.
  • Users who need up to three external displays with the M5 Pro or up to four with the M5 Max.
  • Buyers who want pro tier chips with up to 128GB of memory.

Weight and thickness

Apple says the 14 inch touchscreen model weighs 3 pounds, half a pound less than before. The 16 inch touchscreen model is nearly a millimeter thinner than before. Apple's announcement for the M6 model does not give a weight, so a direct weight comparison is not possible.

The choice comes down to Touch and the OLED screen against a $900 price gap. If Touch and the display matter to your work, the touchscreen model is the only one of the two that offers them. If not, the 14 inch M6 model covers the core features for less.
