review

One of these foldables is already in shops. The other has not shipped yet and costs roughly €900 more. That alone should make you pause before you get swept up in the hype around Apple’s very first book style phone.

We read every line of both spec sheets in the SpexHive database, from the hinge to the camera, and the result is more surprising than you would expect. Keep reading, because one number on Apple’s side is still marked “XX” and it tells you a lot about how finished this phone really is.

The 30 second verdict

If you want a foldable you can buy today, with a bigger battery, a 200 MP main camera, faster wired charging and a lighter body, the Xiaomi 18 Fold is the one to beat. If you want Apple’s first foldable, with iOS 27, a titanium hinge and the most dust tight body of the two, the Apple iPhone Duo is the one to wait for, as long as you can live with its price.

Key specifications from the SpexHive database. Prices and availability vary by region.

Round 1: Screens and the fold itself

Both phones open into a roughly 7.6 inch tablet sized screen at 120 Hz, and both have a smaller cover display on the outside: 5.4 inches on the Apple, 5.38 inches on the Xiaomi. So far, a draw.

The differences are in the details. Xiaomi quotes a 4,000 nit peak on both screens against Apple’s 3,000 nits. Apple answers with a Nano Texture finish and an anti reflective coating, which should make the screen far easier to read outdoors, and our database notes a “small display crease”. On pure sharpness the Apple wins at about 430 ppi against 382 ppi.

Winner: a split decision. Xiaomi for brightness, Apple for sharpness and glare control.

Round 2: Body, weight and toughness

Foldables live or die by how they feel in the pocket. The Xiaomi is 35 g lighter (219 g against 254 g) and slightly thinner both open (5.0 mm against 5.2 mm) and closed (10.7 mm against 11.3 mm). That is a real difference you will notice every single day.

Apple counters with a grade 5 titanium frame and hinge and an IP68 rating, meaning fully dust tight and protected against immersion up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. The Xiaomi is rated IP58 and IP59: dust protected rather than dust tight, but resistant to high pressure water jets. For beach and pool users, the iPhone Duo’s rating is the stronger promise.

Winner: Xiaomi for weight, Apple for protection.

Round 3: Performance, two very different chips

This round is more interesting than usual because the two chips come from very different places. The Apple iPhone Duo uses Apple’s A20 Pro built on a 2 nm process with a six core design. The Xiaomi 18 Fold runs Xiaomi’s own XRing O3 on a 3 nm process, with ten cores up to 4.35 GHz and a 16 core Arm GPU.

We do not have lab results for either phone yet, so we will not guess who is faster. What we can say is that Xiaomi gives you more memory choices, up to 16 GB of RAM with UFS 4.1 storage, while Apple tops out at 12 GB but offers a massive 2 TB option.

Winner: too close to call until independent tests arrive.

Round 4: Cameras, 200 MP against a pair of 48s

On paper this is the most lopsided round. The Xiaomi carries a 200 MP main camera (23 mm, f/1.7, optical stabilisation), a 50 MP telephoto with optical stabilisation and 80 mm reach, and a 50 MP ultra wide. Video goes up to 8K.

The Apple has only two rear cameras: a 48 MP wide camera (f/1.6, sensor shift stabilisation, a large 1/1.56 inch sensor) and a 48 MP ultra wide. There is no telephoto lens listed at all. On video, the iPhone Duo supports 4K at up to 120 fps, Dolby Vision HDR and ProRes.

Winner: Xiaomi, easily, for the number and range of lenses.

Plot twist #1: the number that is still “XX”

Look at the selfie camera on Apple’s spec sheet in our database and you will find an “XX MP under display camera”. That placeholder means the resolution has not been confirmed. The battery is the same story: the entry simply reads “Li Ion” with no capacity. For a phone that is still weeks away from shipping, that is normal, but it also means you should treat every Apple figure on this page as provisional until the phone is in reviewers’ hands.

The Xiaomi has no such gaps. It lists a 6,000 mAh silicon carbon battery, two 16 MP selfie cameras (one inside, one on the cover) and a complete set of figures, because you can already buy it.

Plot twist #2: charging and the extras

Apple’s listing shows 50% in 20 minutes over a wire and 25 W wireless charging through MagSafe and Qi2. Xiaomi offers 67 W wired charging, 50 W wireless and reverse wired charging for topping up accessories. It also keeps an infrared blaster to control your TV, something Apple has never offered.

In Apple’s favour, the Duo lists stylus support and a SIM setup that is eSIM only, which suits travellers who swap plans often. The Xiaomi uses two physical Nano SIMs.

Price: the gap that decides it for most people

The Apple iPhone Duo is listed at about €2,300. The Xiaomi 18 Fold is listed at about €1,400, and that is the China price, so check what it costs where you live. Even so, the difference is around €900, or 39% less, for a phone that is lighter, has a bigger confirmed battery and the stronger camera system.

What does the extra money buy? Mostly Apple’s ecosystem, iOS 27 on a foldable, titanium construction and the most dust tight body. If those matter to you, they are worth paying for. If you simply want the best foldable hardware per euro, there is only one answer.

Who should buy which?

Buy the Xiaomi 18 Fold if…

  • you want a foldable that is available right now;
  • camera range and a big battery matter more to you than the logo on the back;
  • you want the lightest and thinnest body of the two.

Buy the Apple iPhone Duo if…

  • you already live inside Apple’s ecosystem and want the first foldable that fits it;
  • you want IP68 protection and a titanium hinge;
  • you can wait until after 23 October and read the first independent reviews before paying.

The verdict

If you judge by hardware and by what you can actually buy, the Xiaomi 18 Fold wins this comparison clearly: lighter, cheaper, a stronger camera system and a confirmed 6,000 mAh battery. The Apple iPhone Duo is the more exciting story, and it will appeal to anyone committed to Apple, but it asks you to pay a lot extra for a phone whose camera and battery details are not even finalised.

The best advice is simple: if you cannot wait, buy the Xiaomi. If you can, wait for the Apple reviews and then run the full comparison again with the final numbers.
