Same chip. Same cameras. Same 120 Hz screen technology. Same 12 GB of memory. So why does Apple charge €150 more for the bigger iPhone, and why do so many buyers still pay it?
We lined up the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in the SpexHive database and found that almost everything is identical, except three things that change how you live with the phone every day. Stay until the end, because one of those differences is worth 2 hours and 36 minutes of screen time.
Pick the iPhone 18 Pro Max if battery life is your top priority and you do not mind a bigger, heavier phone. Pick the iPhone 18 Pro if you want the same power in a body that fits one hand and a trouser pocket. You lose nothing in performance or camera quality by going smaller.
Key specifications from the SpexHive database. Prices vary by country.
Round 1: Display, a size difference and nothing else
Both screens are the same LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED panel: 120 Hz, HDR10, Dolby Vision, 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits in high brightness mode and a 3,000 nit peak. Both are protected by Ceramic Shield 2 with an anti reflective coating, and both come out at about 460 pixels per inch.
In our own measurements the two screens were almost identical in brightness too: 971 nits on the Pro and 969 nits on the Pro Max. What you are choosing is simply how much of it you get: 6.3 inches or 6.9 inches. If you watch a lot of video, read long articles or play games, the bigger screen is a real upgrade. If you mostly text and scroll one handed, it becomes a burden.
Winner: a tie on quality, Pro Max for sheer screen area.
Round 2: Performance, essentially a dead heat
Both phones use the Apple A20 Pro, a 2 nm chip with six cores (two at 4.93 GHz and four at 2.64 GHz) and a 7 core GPU, backed by 12 GB of RAM. Our test results show how close they are:
AnTuTu: 3,402,829 on the Pro and 3,463,072 on the Pro Max;
Geekbench 6: 12,641 against 12,794;
3DMark Wild Life Extreme: 7,942 against 7,931.
The Pro Max is about 1 to 2% ahead in two of the three tests, and the Pro is a hair ahead in the third. That is within normal variation, so do not pick the bigger phone for speed.
Winner: a tie.
Round 3: Cameras, literally the same
Here is the part many people do not expect. Both phones carry exactly the same three cameras: a 48 MP main camera with a variable aperture from f/1.5 to f/4.0 and sensor shift stabilisation, a 48 MP periscope telephoto at 100 mm with 4x optical zoom, and a 48 MP ultra wide at 13 mm with a 120 degree view. The selfie camera is an 18 MP unit on both. Video tools are the same too, including 4K at 120 fps, Dolby Vision, ProRes RAW and Apple Log 2.
The iPhone 18 Pro is not a lesser camera phone. It is the same camera phone, smaller.
Plot twist #1: the battery gap is bigger than the screen gap
This is the real reason the Pro Max exists. Its battery is 5,391 mAh against 4,056 mAh in the Pro, which is roughly 33% more capacity. The eSIM only versions show the same gap, 5,567 mAh against 4,288 mAh.
It shows up in our testing. The Pro Max scored an active use result of 19 hours 20 minutes. The Pro managed 16 hours 44 minutes. That is 2 hours and 36 minutes longer, about 15% more time away from a charger. The EU energy label tells the same story: 62 hours of endurance for the Pro Max against 52 hours for the Pro.
Charging speed is the same on both: 50% in 15 minutes over a wire, and 25 W wireless with MagSafe and Qi2.
Plot twist #2: weight, the cost nobody lists on the box
To get that extra battery you carry 38 g more: 249 g against 211 g, a phone that is nearly 18% heavier. It is also 13.4 mm taller and 6.1 mm wider. The thickness is the same 8.8 mm on both, so the Pro Max is not chunkier, just larger in every other direction.
Both phones are IP68 rated and both use the same glass front, aluminium frame and glass back. Durability is not a deciding factor.
Price: €150 for more battery and more screen
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at €1,449 (£1,199). The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at €1,599 (£1,299). That is about 10% more for 33% more battery and 0.6 inches more screen, which is honestly fair value if you will use both. If you will not, the smaller phone gives you everything else at a lower price.
Who should buy which?
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro if…
you want to use the phone comfortably with one hand;
pocket space and weight matter, since it is 38 g lighter;
you charge every night anyway, so 16 to 17 hours of heavy use is plenty.
Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if…
you are a heavy user who wants the longest battery life Apple makes;
you watch video, read or game a lot and want the biggest canvas;
you often travel and cannot always find a charger.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max faster than the iPhone 18 Pro? No. Both use the Apple A20 Pro with 12 GB of RAM, and our benchmark results are within 2% of each other.
Do both have the same cameras? Yes. Both have three 48 MP cameras with identical lenses and the same 18 MP selfie camera.
How much longer does the Pro Max battery last? In our active use test, 19 hours 20 minutes against 16 hours 44 minutes, which is 2 hours 36 minutes longer.
How much heavier is the Pro Max? 38 g heavier: 249 g against 211 g.
The verdict
This is one of the easiest choices in the whole lineup, because the decision is only about size. If you want the best battery and the biggest screen, buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max. For everyone else, the iPhone 18 Pro delivers the same chip, the same cameras and the same display quality for €150 less and 38 g less in your pocket.
Before you decide, run the full comparison and hold both in a shop if you can. Hand feel is something no spec sheet can measure.
